Iron 50 mg — Timed Release, 60 caplets

Iron is an essential trace mineral. Approximately 70% of the body's iron forms part of hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells. As part of hemoglobin, iron helps transport oxygen to all the tissues and cells in the body.

The remainder of iron is found in myoglobin, a protein that supplies oxygen to the muscles. It also forms part of various enzymes and immune system compounds. Iron transports oxygen to all tissues and helps cells to respire, processes essential for life.

Iron 50 mg Timed Release prevents or treats iron-deficiency anemia and helps to form red blood cells. It promotes overall health and helps fight fatigue and disease.

Restrictions

Drug Interactions: Iron may interact with or reduce the effectiveness of the following medications: Antibiotics, Anti-Arthritics, Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), Adrenocortical Steroids, Anti-Gout Drugs, Bowel Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Fluoroquinolones, Anti-Parkinson’s Disease Drugs, Salicylates, Statins, Thyroid Hormones.

Nutrient Depletions: Iron may be depleted by: Antipsychotic Drugs (Neuroleptics, Major Tranquilizers), Antipyretics (Fever Reducing Drugs), Histamine (H2) Blockers.

Iron supplements may decrease the absorption of zinc. Ingestion of foods high in phosphates, phytates (in some grains and legumes), oxalates (in some vegetables), tannic acid (found in tea), coffee, soy protein isolates, large doses of chromium, and calcium can inhibit iron absorption. Avoid taking iron at the same time as food or supplements containing any of these nutrients.

Supportive Interactions: Vitamin C, Vitamin A, molybdenum (trace mineral) and small amounts of meat enhance the absorption of iron.

Warnings and Precautions: There is enough drug in this package to seriously harm a child. Keep out of reach of children. Some people may experience constipation, diarrhea, or vomiting.

Toxicity, Adverse Reactions and Side Effects: Do not exceed recommended dosage. There is significant potential for iron toxicity, since the body does not excrete excess iron. Any excess that accumulates can damage tissues and organs, and may cause heart failure and cirrhosis of the liver.

Iron supplements may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as abdominal upset or cramping, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and darkly coloured stools (caused by unabsorbed iron). Taking iron supplements with a meal may help to reduce these side effects.
